      Trailmix 7 & Elkinsville
January 2006  - Posted by Jeff
We didn't make the Trailmix7 Geocaching event and it sounded like a blast.  T woke up with a splitting headache so we stayed around home until later in the day.  We did get curious about the location, so Sat. afternoon we fired up Google maps and got directions to the coordinates and headed out for an afternoon drive.  The directions took us from Columbus, south of Brown County State Park and ultimately through Story and on Elkinsville road.  We missed the left turn on Combs road (apparently unmarked), topped a hill, and about 200 yds ahead the road emptied into a wetlands.  Really a beautiful drive but not exactly where we wanted to be:)  We backtracked to US46 and eventually went into Bloomington and took 446 to the Fire Tower.  By now it was 5pm, so we walked around a bit to take in a bit of the view before meandering south on 446 through Freetown and back to Columbus.

One of the coolest parts of the drive was the simple monument and memorial that we found dedicated to the once proud community of Elkinsville.  Elkinsville was a small community that was relocated as part of the Monroe Reservoir project.  The front of the monument reads:

Elkinsville
"The Town that Was"

In memory of those who lived in Elkinsville and whose property was bought by the U.S. Army Corps of engineers in 1962-1964, to build the Monroe Reservoir.
That day we moved, we'll never forget
As goodbyes were said and the sun set
Never again in these hills we'll roam
but in our hearts, this is always home.

"May our enchanted valley give you peace"

Elkinsville - Founded in the 1850's was
named for William Elkins to honor one of the first settlers to settle in Elkinsville.  William settled here in the early 1800's.  In its early years, the town flourished because of its extensive trading.  In the late 1800's, the town had a one-room school, a grocery store, a post office, a church for the faithful and a simple way of life for it residents.
"Bathed in the shadow of Browning Mountain, a wonder in itself"

The back of the monument is a memorial to the families.

Hello Geocache world!
January 2006  - Posted by Jeff
We heard about Geocaching from my wife's parents who are full-time RV-ers that spend most of their winter in S. California and head back to this area in the summer. They have gone Geocaching with friends out there and had a great time. Also, my wife's sister has gone Geocaching on horseback in west-central IN.  We found our first Geocache on Dec. 10, 2006 and we now certainly have the Geocaching bug. We even went out on Christmas day 2006 (40 degrees and light rain) to find a couple of caches.

We use a Samsung i730 Cellphone / Pocket PC (Windows Mobile 5) with an OnCourse Bluetooth GPS and GeoScout software. Not a bad combo as it is about the size of a typical hand-held GPS unit and also has Internet capability to download new cache sites anywhere we happen to be.
